The Twilight of the Gods - the extinction of both the gods and the power of the gold. Siegfried and Brünnhilde, too, fall victim to the curse of the ring, which brings misfortune and destruction to the one who possesses it. Through intrigues of the dwarfs, who still want the ring for themselves, the two lovers are confounded and set against each other. Brünnhilde betrays the vulnerable place on Siegfried's body, which the dwarfs utilise to kill him. Only after his death does Brünnhilde realise that she has been deceived.

She consigns both the dead Siegfried and herself to the flames of a funeral pyre, which is then flooded by the waters of the Rhine. The ring is finally returned to the Rhinemaidens and the home of the gods is destroyed by fire, bringing their power and dominion to an end.
